For many international students on an F-1 visa, Optional Practical Training (OPT) provides an exciting opportunity to gain real-world experience in their field of study. If you’re in a science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM) program, you’re likely eligible for an additional 24-month STEM OPT extension — but understanding how it works is critical.
In this blog, we’ll walk you through the essentials of the STEM OPT extension: eligibility, application timelines, employer requirements, and what to do if something goes wrong.
STEM OPT is a 24-month extension of post-completion OPT for F-1 students who earned a degree in an eligible STEM field. Combined with the initial 12 months of standard OPT, it gives international graduates up to 36 months of work authorization in the U.S.
To qualify, you must:
Be in valid F-1 status.
Be currently engaged in a 12-month period of post-completion OPT.
Have earned a degree in a STEM-designated field from an accredited U.S. institution.
Be employed (or have a job offer) from an employer enrolled in E-Verify.
Work in a role directly related to your STEM degree.
You can apply for the STEM OPT extension no earlier than 90 days before your current OPT expires and no later than the expiration date itself. USCIS must receive your complete application before your current OPT ends.
Pro Tip: Apply early! Delays are common, and you’ll want to ensure continuity in your work authorization.
Here are the basics of what you’ll need:
Form I-765 (Application for Employment Authorization)
Form I-983 (Training Plan for STEM OPT Students) completed with your employer
Copy of your current EAD card
Proof of your degree in a STEM field (e.g., transcripts, diploma)
Copy of your passport and visa
Your employer must:
Be enrolled in E-Verify
Offer work that’s directly related to your STEM degree
Help complete and comply with the Form I-983 training plan
Report material changes to your job or training plan
You can switch employers while on STEM OPT, but:
The new employer must also be in E-Verify.
You must submit a new Form I-983.
You must notify your Designated School Official (DSO) within 10 days.
Missing deadlines: Failing to apply before your OPT expires may mean you lose the opportunity.
Working for non-E-Verify companies: This automatically disqualifies you from the extension.
Incomplete Form I-983: USCIS takes the training plan seriously. Treat it like a formal application.
STEM OPT is a valuable path for international students who want to build a career in the U.S. after graduation. With careful planning, timely application, and a supportive employer, you can gain an extra two years of experience in your field.
