F1 vs J1 vs M1: Which Visa Do You Actually Need?
Three visas, three different purposes. Here is a simple breakdown so you can tell which one fits your plan.
When you first start looking into studying in the U.S., the letters and numbers can blur together. F1, J1, M1. They sound similar, but they are built for different goals. Let us break them down in plain language so you can see which one fits you.
The F1 visa: academic study
The F1 is the most common student visa. It is for full time academic study at a college, university, high school, or language program. If you are earning a degree, this is almost always your visa. It also comes with strong work options like CPT, Day 1 CPT, and OPT.
The M1 visa: vocational training
The M1 is for hands-on, skill-based training rather than academic degrees. Think aviation, culinary arts, cosmetology, and technical trades. If you want to learn a specific skill and get to work, the M1 may be your path. Work options are more limited than F1, so it helps to know the rules first.
The J1 visa: exchange programs
The J1 is for approved exchange programs. It covers student exchange, research scholars, professors, interns, and trainees. A program sponsor issues your DS-2019 form. One thing to watch is that some J1 programs come with a two year home residency rule, which can affect your future plans.
A quick way to choose
- Earning a degree at a college or university? F1 is likely your visa.
- Learning a trade or technical skill? Look at M1.
- Joining an approved exchange, research, or intern program? That is J1.
